Goal Setting And Goal Achievement For Determined Individuals
What's the #1 Reason most people don't achieve their goals? - They don't set
them.
We at Noble River like to set goals at the beginning of every endeavor.
Goal Setting and Reviews are built into our normal business process.
And we suggest you do the same. For those of you who are still
unsure about goals, here are a few facts that will get you started.
Why you need to set goals.
- Goals give you a sense of purpose. Very often when
you are setting out to achieve something, there are difficult decisions
to
make. Goals give you that reason to take those decisions.
- Goals help you determine your direction.
- Goals give you a roadmap for success.
- Goals help you focus and concentrate your attention on important
activities.
- Goals let you take stock along the way.
- How do you know you've been successful? - by setting goals and
achieving them.
- Achieving goals gives you great satisfaction.
What kind of goals should you set?
- Every major goal needs to be meaningful to you on a deep personal
level. It has to fulfill an yearning in you.
- Goals need to be your own. Someone else's desires cannot be your
goals.
- Set goals that are as specific and clear as possible.
- eg. I will make $1million from my business by my 35th birthday.
- When writing your goals, vagueness has to be removed at all costs.
- Do not use weak words like "hope to" or "plan to" when writing your
goals. Always write definitive goals. Weak goals are pre-built
excuses for failure.
- Set goals that are visually clear.
For example, if you want to own a Ferrari, go down to the
dealership, sit in the car and click a photo of yourselves in a Ferrari.
Just make sure you get the exact color and make on the photo that you
want to achieve.
- Always associate goals with a date. If there is no date on the goal,
it is merely a resolution.
- Set goals that are outside your reach now(at least by a little bit).
The goals you set need to make you think, and plan and work on them hard
enough. You defeat the purpose of goal setting if you set your goals too
low.
- When possible, set goals for which you have a role model. If someone
has done it, you can do it too.
- Set goals that are complementary to each other. These are goals that
do not clash in their fulfillment.
- Set goals that will need you to gain a new skill, work in a
different way or think on a completely new level. The goals you set
should not be those that merely require you to work harder.
- Set goals that can be broken down into many sub-goals.
- Set separate personal goals and business goals.
How to achieve the goals you set?
- Write down all your goals. Keep business goals separate from
personal goals.
- Align business goals with your personal goals.
For example: I am going on a cruise around the world in my personal
125 ft yacht starting April 2011 and I will pay for this with profits from my business.
- Write your major goal down with a red marker in huge letters on a
poster sheet. Printing it does not work the same. It needs to be written
out in your own handwriting.
- Write down your goals with the date you are going to achieve it.
- Keep them where you can see them daily; for example on the front
page of your journal.
- Review them on a daily basis.
- Rewrite them on a regular basis. This helps your brain believe in
those goals.
- Get support from your spouse or other significant other. The chances
of achieving your goal increases exponentially as the number of people
believing in and working on a goal.
- Put up pictures on a wall in your office. These pictures help
refresh and rejuvenate you when you are feeling tired.
- Life comes in the way; no matter what you do. Make some allowances
for Life.
- Takes stock often. Like the first of every month(or week; if you
like). This will help you speed up if you need be.
- Important: Find a mentor who can help you achieve your goals. Then
work out a plan with him for regular mentorship and direction.
Tips and Tricks
- Write down the big picture goal at the top of a sheet of paper with
the target date. Then write down the secondary goals by working
backwards from the target date and goal. These are goals you will
achieve along the way. Its important to have them as help you do course
and speed corrections.
- Write down what you are going to do every day to achieve your
sub-goals. Then stick to it.
- Share your goals with someone who can hold you to them. Review your
progress with this person and your mentor on a daily basis.
- Reward yourselves appropriately when you achieve sub-goals.
- Share business goals with your team.
